Study Tips for MOG Students





  1. Some students have the unique ability to hyper-focus. As such, you run the risk of finding yourself so caught up in a task that you completely lose track of time. Set alarms for everything!

  2. Identify what distracts you. Talk to your parents. Work as a team.


  3. Does your mind wander in utter silence? If so, avoid the library. For some students, a quiet room with the occasional sound, like coughing, page turning, or whispers is more distracting than a noisy environment where they can tune everything out.


  4. If you have a hard time sitting still, find a study space will allow you to pace while you study without disturbing others. My brother use to honestly bounce a tennis ball while he studied.

  5. Do you find yourself remembering other tasks, like the upcoming basketball game? The key is to figure out what distracts you. It may be a trial and error process, but keep trying different settings while evaluating your productivity.

  6. The thought of studying for hours at a time can be daunting. Set a timer for increments of dedicated study time and be sure to include short breaks. If you find yourself “in the zone” and want to go longer than the dedicated study time, keep going! Just remember that when you take a break, set an alarm so that you don’t accidentally spend two hours on MindCraft.


  7. Make lists. Some kids have a difficult time prioritizing. Sit down and make a list of everything that needs to get done. Don’t worry about the order. Go over your list a second time and number the tasks in order of importance.


  8. If you have a large assignment, write out all the steps. This will help divide the task up into manageable chunks so that you are not overloaded with everything all at once. This will help you set realistic goals for yourself.


  9. Save the best for last…or maybe not-do what works best for you.
    1. The first way is, if there are multiple assignments of equal importance, do the ones you like least first. Starting is often easier than finishing for some students. After a certain amount of time, your attention will wane. But, if you are heading toward an assignment you want to do, it can help you stay focused while you get there. Also, the victories you earn as each assignment is completed will help you to keep going. You may be more productive if you save the best till last.
    2. However, some students find it best to start with the easiest tasks first. Going this route can help you get the juices flowing. Also, it may very well be the case that you cannot concentrate on the less appealing tasks because your mind keeps going back to the more favorable assignment. If you struggle to get the ball rolling, do what’s easiest first. The same principle as stated earlier applies: the victories you earn as each assignment is completed will fuel you to keep going.



  10. Write down stray thoughts. Write down the fleeting, distracting thoughts. The brain is programmed to keep things that we don’t want to forget in the forefront of our mind, which crowds out the information you are trying to learn. These thoughts can easily bounce around, distracting you from the task at hand. Get it all out. It’ll clear your mind so that you can concentrate on your work; if it’s written down, it won’t have to stay on your mind.


  11. If organization seems more difficult for you than others, just remember that overcoming a difficulty makes you stronger than someone to whom it comes easily, and more able to overcome challenges in the future.
  12. Take a walk. It’s been proven that exercise can boost your memory and brain power. Research provides evidence that about 20 minutes exercise before a study session  can improve performance.

    16. Reward Yourself with A Treat. There are many ways to integrate a reward system into your study habits. Get all your Math and Science homework done before playing 20 minutes of Mindcraft.




  13. Talk to yourself or other. Don’t be afraid to read information aloud to yourself. If you retain information better by talking through the concepts, study with someone else.

One way to see if you really understand something is to try to teach it to someone else. If you can’t get anyone to listen to you explain the 10 Commandments to a class of stuffed animals!





  1. Create Mental Associations. The ability to make connections is an easier way to remember information. Mind Maps are an easy way to connect ideas by creating a visual overview of different connections. Use the program Inspiration to make your own maps.








  2.  Draw Diagrams it will help you to visualize information which would be hard to describe. This creates a visual memory in your mind which can be recalled in an exam.


  3.  Times New Roman is the Fastest Font to Read

    Simply put – there’s a reason why Times New Roman is the default font on most applications


  4.  Use Apps to Block Distracting Sites or set timers.The SelfControl app helps you to avoid distractions by blocking websites for a certain amount of time.


  5. Search like a professional.












  6.  Ask your parents first but sometimes watching a Video on the topic can help. Videos are an entertaining way of compacting an entire story into a short timeframe. This will help you remember key details.

  8. Listen to good music. Have you made your Mozart Spotify playlist yet?


  9.  Create realistic, test like condition and test your understanding by using Quizlet.
  10. Don’t stay up late.  When you sleep, your brain assimilates the information you have learned when studying so getting a good night’s sleep will help you remember those math formulas.
  11. Use Scents or Gum to Jog Your Memory. This may seem a bit random but spraying an unfamiliar scent while you’re studying can help jog your memory when you spray it again just before a test. Chewing a strange kind of gum will work the same way. 







  12. Study in a Group. Studying in a group can help you collect new insights to enhance your learning experience.
